Salt when consumed contains negligible calories so it can not be directly associated with obesity and fat deposition in the body. However it can have some effects on body which can be related to obesity. Excessive salt intake increases the progressive thirst intake.

This can indirectly cause consumption of high calorie beverages like sodas, colas, soft drink which in turn adds unnecessary empty calories in your diet. Another reason why people avoid salt in the diet to lose weight is because decrease in sodium causes loss of excess water from the body. This in turn leads to weight loss, but this is temporary as this weight loss is associated with water loss and not fat loss.

Sodium on the other hand is a very important mineral and should not be eliminated from the diet for weight loss as it plays vital functions in the body. But on the same side it is important to avoid excessive salted foods full of calories like pickles, salted pork, salted meat, and sausages, canned, processed and refined foods which are high in sodium. Make a habit to read the food labels for sodium content before consuming any item.
