Diet for weight loss

Dear Sir, I am large weight, please suggest diet control?
(25 Oct 2007)

Excessive weight gain is often the result of a faulty diet coupled with a sedentary lifestyle. Consuming food that is rich in saturated fats, such as oily and deep-fried snacks, as well as artificially sweetened drinks and beverages, and highly calorific desserts like ice-creams and pastries causes weight gain. Lack of adequate physical exercise is also greatly responsible for the accumulation of fatty tissue in the body.

Heredity also plays a crucial role in determining the natural body type of a person, so that some people are genetically predisposed to put on weight more easily than others.

You must follow a few basic rules to check further weight gain. Cut down on your consumption of red meats, milk and chocolate-based sweets, deep-fried snacks, and carbonated and alcoholic drinks. Switch over to healthier options like homemade fruit juices and raw vegetables, as these supply essential nutrients to the body without adding to the fat deposits. Citrus fruits, pineapples, carrot, papaya, gourds, cabbage, leeks, lettuce and spinach should be included in your regular diet. Foodstuff containing high level of starch like rice and potatoes should also be avoided. You should also try to cook food using a minimal amount of oil, and opt for sunflower or vegetable oil instead of groundnut oil or butter as cooking medium in order to control your intake of fats. Restrict the amount of salt that you use in cooking. Eat whole grains, pulses and soy products in generous amounts. Drink at least 10 glasses of water every day to ensure proper digestion of food. Drinking a glass of lukewarm water after every meal is also recommended as this helps in the proper digestion of food. You should also make it a point to set aside at least an hour every day for some form of physical exercise, such as brisk walking, jogging, swimming or aerobics. This improves the metabolic rate and burns down the excess calories and fat tissues present in the body, thereby aiding weight loss.  Besides these general measures, a couple of particular dietary tips may also be followed to lose weight. Add a spoonful of honey and the juice of a fresh lemon to a glass of lukewarm water and drink this solution every morning. This is a very popular and effective natural means of losing weight. Chew a few mint leaves every morning or use mint leaves to flavor salads, as the juice of this herb helps reduce body weight.

Weight loss should be a gradual process in which determination and sincerity plays an important role. Always go for the combination of diet and exercise, as emphasis on only one would lead you back to square one. Try the following tips for losing weight –

  • Start your day with a warm glass of water with added honey and lime juice. Honey and lime juice are very beneficial when taken with warm water to lose weight.
  • Consume at least 8-9 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables. Before starting a meal have a full bowl of salad then continue with other food items. Avoid adding heavy dressings like mayonnaise or white sauce in it. Salt, pepper, vinegar or lemon juice also tastes great when added in salads.
  • Drink a glass of water 30 minutes before having your main meals.
  • Avoid fried, oily, processed, canned foods, carbonated beverages, soft drinks, colas, sweets, cakes, and pastries.
  • Emphasize on whole cereals and its products and avoid refined flour and its products completely.
  • Physical activity and exercise plays an important role along with diet in weight loss. A simple continuous brisk walk for 40 minutes daily will also help a lot.
