Swelling in the ankle queries

Our legs and especially the ankles are subjected to a great deal of pressure everyday. Hence it is very important that we take adequate care of our ankles when they are injured. An ankle injury is most commonly caused by twisted the outer side of your ankle.

If you overdo the stress on a common twist, you could end up with a sprain and the symptoms can only get worse. You could either fracture a bone or tear a muscle. An ankle injury can also be caused by excessive physical activity which may finally lead to tendonitis.

You could be wearing shoes that do not provide proper support to your ankles or the pain could be caused by medical conditions such as gout. If the pain persists for more than four days without being connected to an injury, seek medical attention at once.

Once you have injured your leg, ensure that you rest your leg properly. Putting undue strain on an injured will only make the pain worse and you should keep your leg elevated as far as possible. To reduce the swelling apply ice on your ankle at least five to six times a day for fifteen minutes each. Ensure that you buy and wear shoes that are suited for the activity and that support your ankle and not stress it out. If you are flat-footed, your shoes should have adequate arch-support and if your job requires you to be on your feet most the day, you should buy cushioned innersoles to help you. If your ankle pain is due to gout, the first thing that you must do is change your diet and avoid high-purine foods that trigger gout attacks. You should also try and lose weight to reduce the pressure on your ankles.
