Question on stretch marks

How do you decrease appearance of stretch marks?
(22 Oct 2007)

Stretch marks can be the cause of a great deal of annoyance for those individuals experiencing it. Whether you notice these stretch marks around your stomach or at different places on your body, you would be keen to get rid of them. Stretch marks are usually caused when the collagen under the skin is damaged.

The collagen can get damaged due to the rapid gain of fat or muscle in a particular area. The stretch marks begin as thin red lines and gradually fade away to appear as whitish scars over the course of time. Because of the fact that stretch marks are caused due to excessive damage to the collagen, it is not easy to diminish their appearance. Therefore, it is advisable to prevent the development of stretch marks by maintaining a steady pace while working out or when gaining rate.

There are several types of creams and ointments available over-the-counter which are considered to be effective in reducing the appearance of the stretch marks. It is however, advisable that you consult your doctor before trying any self treatment involving over the counter or prescription medication. Your doctor is best equipped to evaluate your exact condition and recommend the appropriate cause of treatment. Vitamin E oil and cocoa butter are also considered to be effective in treating this condition. The butter and the oil need to be massaged into the affected area a couple of times daily or more depending on your personal preference. It is ideally recommended to be used as soon as you notice the onset of stretch marks. Needless to say, the sooner the marks are acted upon, the better the chances of reducing its appearance.

Cosmetic laser surgery is today considered to be one of the most effective options in treating stretch marks. This treatment removes, vaporizes and breaks down skin tissues. Seven to eight sessions are required to achieve the best results. It is however, important to remember, that as effective as laser surgery is considered to be, it may still not be beneficial for every individual.

Do bear in mind, that the damage caused to the deep fibers of the skin, is extremely difficult and many times almost impossible to treat. This is the reason that most experts recommend, that it is far better to prevent the occurrence of stretch marks rather than heal them. You can do this effectively by controlling your weight gain and closely monitoring your muscle building routine. It would be also highly beneficial to ensure that you drink plenty of water and follow a healthy well-balanced diet.
