Post Gall Bladder Removal Diet

by Kevin Pederson
The gall bladder stores bile that is produced in the liver and also plays a part in the digestive process. When food is passed into the small intestine from the stomach, the gall bladder releases bile to assist digestion. The most common problem that affects the gall bladder is gall stones.

These develop when there is too much cholesterol contained in the bile. Most individuals develop gall stones due to ingestion of excess fat through the diet.

Those affected with gall bladder disease are required to follow a diet that is low in fat.

The bile that is stored in the gall bladder is very essential for proper digestion and if there is a shortage or absence of bile, the fat obtained from food will not be digested well. This can could result in diarrhea and other illnesses. Therefore a diet therapy must be followed in the long term, after gall stone removal. A low fat diet reduces pressure on the gall bladder and hence allows it adequate rest. Eating foods low in fat also help in preventing painful contractions of the bile duct. Gall stones are composed of calcium or pigments of bile that form due to accumulation of too much cholesterol in the bile. As such, diet therapy does not help to reduce the size of the stones, although it does help to encourage excretion of the smaller stones. Those with the problem of gall stones are advised to eat starchy foods such as cereal, rice and bread. One must also incorporate fiber into the diet through consumption of vegetables and fruits. Refined foods and fatty foods cause aggravation of the condition and hence must be avoided.

Following a gall stone removal, the diet needs to be regulated such that strain is not exerted on the organ again. Therefore individuals who have undergone such a procedure are required to refrain from eating fried and fatty foods like red meat. Meals should also be smaller in proportions and heavy meals should especially be avoided before bedtime. Carbonated beverages can trigger movement of existing stones, thereby leading to pain and discomfort. Therefore these drinks must be avoided. Crash or binge diets should be avoided, and steady, gradual weight loss should be achieved. Opt for skim milk or low fat milk, lean meats and more fruits and vegetables. Omega 3 fatty acids are helpful in preventing the formation of cholesterol in the bile and hence must be taken in the form of fish oil capsules.
