Spring allergies, also known as
hay fever, can prove to a bothersome and discomforting condition. The symptoms include persistent sneezing, nasal discharge, stuffiness in the nose, itchy eyes and
wheezing. There are several things one can do to keep spring allergies in check.
Pollen which is one of the main triggers of spring allergies attaches itself to the skin and clothes. Therefore it is important for those vulnerable to these allergies to wash their clothes properly and change them regularly. The clothes must especially be changed after coming in from outdoors.
When working outdoors, it is advisable to wear a mask that will prevent inhalation of pollen or other allergens that may be present in the environment. For added protection, you can also protect your skin from pollen by wearing long pants and full sleeves. The pollen count is generally higher on days that are breezy or sunny. Therefore, you can schedule your time outdoors when there is cloud cover and calm winds. This will reduce your exposure to pollen. A neti pot is very effective in flushing out allergens from the nose and sinuses. It is a small pot that has a long, slim spout. The pot must be filled with warm saline water, which is then poured into one nostril through the spout. This causes the dust, pollen and other irritants to get flushed out. Those who suffer from spring allergies are advised to refrain from cutting grass during the seasons when pollen count is high. If someone else is cutting the grass outside, ensure that you close your windows and doors, until all the allergens settles down.
Plant that scatter their seeds through the air are bound to trigger off allergies. If you would like to have plants around the house, ensure that you opt for those which rely on insects to transport their pollen. Such plants include azaleas, dogwoods, cherry trees, red maples and begonias. Those with allergies are known to benefit from having air filters in the house. These filters trap pollen and other small particles and prevent them from scattering through the air. Pollen often becomes trapped in the fur of pets. Therefore, if you have pets around the house, prevent them from laying on the couch or bed. Bathing them regularly will also help to get rid of the pollen. Drying clothes outside is a sure way to increase your exposure to pollen and therefore it is advisable to dry them indoors.
