Growing Long Hair Naturally

by Kevin Pederson

Of course; anyone can grow their hair long with a few months of patience! The real problem lies in the day-to-day maintenance to keep those long locks attractive, shiny, and healthy. There are some factors you can consider before making any decision.

The first would be the hair type and texture. People with normal, straight hair usually find it easier to grow and maintain long hair, while those with dry, curly hair don’t have it so easy. Another factor is your lifestyle.

While long hair is generally acceptable if properly groomed, there can be professional or social circumstances where it may be inconvenient. Finally, the important factor is hair care; you have to be prepared to spend the extra time and trouble in taking care of your new and longer ‘shining glory’!

If you have decided to go ahead, you need to start with frequent visits to the salon for trims. While this may sound counter-productive, it helps to get rid of the split ends that develop as hair grows. Frequent trims are also important in maintaining your hair style and preventing a wild, bedraggled look. Pamper your hair with weekly oil massages to stimulate the scalp and nourish the hair roots (follicles). Start with any natural oil, such as mustard, coconut, almond, or olive, and gently heat it before massaging it deep into the hair. After a few minutes, cover your head with a warm towel and relax for around ten minutes before shampooing. If possible, avoid chemical shampoos that can strip natural oils from hair and damage it. For healthy hair, a baby shampoo works just fine. When your hair is almost dry, apply a solution of vinegar in water to coat the hairs. This is an excellent conditioner and lends a shine to the hair. Use a wide-toothed comb to brush out your hair, using gentle, firm strokes from the roots to the tips. This helps to bring sebum, a natural oil-like moisturizer, to the ends of hair. In fact, longer hair often suffers from inadequate moisture towards the hair tips. To avoid this, carry some vinegar in a spray bottle for frequent touch-ups.
Maintain a healthy diet to ensure that your hair grow strong and healthy.

You can start taking a multivitamin and supplements of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty oils, which are essential to hair cell production. Avoid eating processed, oily foods and increase your intake of fresh green vegetables that contain iron, magnesium, and zinc.
