Frizzy Hair Prevention Treatments

by Kevin Pederson

As you may remember, until the age of six or eight you must have had hair that was smoother and finer than it is now. However, once this ‘baby hair’ was replaced by your current hair, there was no looking back! Our hair is a part of our genetic structure, which decides the type, texture, and color.

In your case, you appear to have dry hair that has a tendency to curl and frizz. The can also explain why your hair may be falling, since dry hair is very prone to split ends and other damage. You may notice ads for several hair care products and treatments that promise to straighten hair or stop hair loss.

However, it is scientifically impossible to change the natural properties of your hair. Any changes they bring are purely temporary and their chemical ingredients can also cause long-term damage to the hair. In fact, some hair straightening processes can leave you with permanently damaged, unattractive hair. What you can do is to adopt a sensible hair care program that will ensure you get the best out of your hair.

The main focus of your hair care should be to adequately moisturize your dry hair and prevent any loss of natural moisturizing oils, called sebum. In your case, the pores on your scalp are not producing enough sebum. You can encourage the process by gently massaging the head, which boosts blood circulation to the hair follicles (roots) and vitalizes the sebum-producing cells. For best results, use natural oil, such as coconut, almond, or olive, and gently warm it before applying. Massage gently to coat all the hairs and cover with a hot towel for ten minutes before shampooing. Try using a mild, non-toxic baby shampoo with a few drops of tea tree oil. This will help to protect the scalp from any dandruff, a common problem with dry hair.

Never use hot water (or hot air) on your hair, since it will steal more moisture away from the hair. Let your hair dry naturally and apply a few drops of natural vinegar (a great conditioner) while the hair is still damp. Next, use your fingers to gently disentangle and frizz or curls. Never brush your dry, frizzy hair; use a wide tooth comb only on dry hair. You should also scrunch in some hair sebum; aloe vera gel makes a great natural substitute. Try to shield your hair from sunlight and pollution when you are outdoors. Once a week, add nourishment and shine with a hair pack of freshly-prepared mayonnaise containing olive oil.
