Sore Throat in Expectant Women

by Kevin Pederson
A sore throat is considered to be one of the earliest symptoms of a pregnancy but is often overlooked as nothing but a minimal complication or throat infection. While it is always important to take care of your health at all times, it is even more vital to do so during a pregnancy. This is primarily because of the fact that you are now responsible for two lives.

Moreover, any conditions that you are affected by during the pregnancy could cause complications to the unborn child and manifest into major complications for the son or daughter after they are born. Although we would normally just take some medicine for a sore throat and get it done with, you must be very careful about the medication you take when pregnant. This is because any substance that you take will also be cascaded within your system to the unborn child.

As a result, natural remedies are the safer option of the two considering there is no chemical influence.

Teas are considered to be some of the most effective substances when dealing with a sore throat, especially at the time of pregnancy. However, when brewing a hot cup of tea, it is important to make sure that it is decaf. For faster relief from the sore throat, you could also add a single teaspoon each of lemon juice and honey, mix them together and sip while still hot. Another option would be to warm up a glass of milk and add a teaspoon of turmeric to it and consume the mixture on a regular basis, you can add some honey for taste if you like. The added benefit of this natural remedy is the fact that the increased intake of milk also boosts the calcium levels within the mother’s body – something that is extremely essential during the pregnancy. Simply gargling the throat with warm water mixed with a little salt is also very effective as the salinity in the mixture irritates the bacteria causing the soreness and alters their cellular osmotic balance – thereby providing fast relief against the irritation.

When pregnant, one should take each and every precaution to prevent any complications. Adequate rest, especially during the first trimester is essential as it reduces the chances of the mother contracting a cold or sore throat. A lot of people tend to overwork themselves during this period in anticipation of the second and third trimester believing that they are going to be substantially less productive during those phases.
