Treating Phlegm at Home

by Kevin Pederson
Phlegm is a substance that will very often be present when an individual is affected by some sort of allergy or cold. It is usually a symptom of some other underlying medical condition such as a stuffy nose or nasty cough. Phlegm is essentially a thick mucous discharge from the nose or mouth that, when settles in the chest, could give rise to a bad upper respiratory infection.

As a result, it is important to treat any presence of phlegm as early as possible. While most cases of phlegm will see the substance have a yellowish or greenish coloration, it may vary in intensity depending on the type of virus causing the infection. The more prominent symptoms when affected by the presence of phlegm include a constant post nasal drip where any free flowing mucous will drip down the back of the nasal cavity into the throat.

Patients are also likely to experience some difficulty in breathing while sniffling is a constant reaction to prevent the mucous from dripping out of the nose.

Because of the fact that phlegm is such a common medical ailment to be affected by, a number of rather effective home remedies have been developed all over the world in order to help patients suffering from it. One of the most effective home remedy treatment options is to warm up a glass of milk and add about half a teaspoon of turmeric before consumption to help soothe the throat. You could also try peeling a couple of cloves of garlic and consuming the mixture just before retiring for the night to experience significant throat relief. Another option would be to mix a couple of tablespoons of grape juice with an equal proportion of honey. Consume this concoction at least three times a day for a period of about 5 days to help dry up the phlegm and eliminate the cough. Another very effective and highly regarded home remedy when dealing with phlegm is to juice a single onion and lemon together and combine the extracted juice with a cup of boiling water. Once done, you can add some raw honey to enhance the taste and allow the mixture to cool down at a normal room temperature. For best results, drink an entire glass in a single sitting and have a whole glass at least 3 times a day to eliminate the phlegm at a faster pace.
