Effective Ways to Treat Dry Cough

by Shaun Damon
Coughing is one of the most common reflex actions created by the body. Coughing could occur as a strong symptom indicating the presence of some sort of underlying medical condition or even simply be a temporary inclination of the body to clear some obstruction that may be present in the respiratory tract. A cough could also simply be nothing more than a temporary irritation caused by an allergen or reaction to some atmospheric substance.

A cough is a combination of three distinct actions by the body. Initially, there is a short intake of breath with the larynx closing for a moment, followed by a contraction of the abdominal and chest muscles in order to increase the pressure. The pressure thus allows the air to be driven out of the lungs resulting in the re opening of the larynx.

As a result, blast of air is generated and is propelled at a rather high speed in order to clear the airway of dust, dirt and any other secretions. Some of the factors that could influence the development of a cough include smoking, flu, asthma, gastro intestinal reflux and a whooping cough amongst many other complications. Some of the very prominent symptoms present when affected by a dry cough include chest congestion, a sore throat, body pain and an overall feeling of uneasiness in the system.

Because of the fact that a dry cough is such a relatively common occurrence, there are a number of effective home remedies that have been developed over the years, all over the world. For example, a mixture of almond paste and honey is probably one of the most effective treatments for a dry cough and all that is required is to soak 8 to 9 almond seeds in water over the course of the night and, in the morning, grind the almonds into a paste after having peeled off the upper skin. Add some amount of honey and a tablespoon of butter to the concoction and consume the paste regularly at least two or three times a day to notice a significant improvement in the condition within a matter of days. Turmeric is also highly considered for its effectiveness when dealing with a dry cough. Use a single tablespoon of the substance and add it to a glass of water containing a tablespoon of carom seeds. Boil the concoction until only half of its original volume remains. Add some honey to it and consume the syrup three times a day at regular intervals. This mixture helps loosen the cough and clears the mucus membrane.
