Eyelid Swelling Treatment

by Shaun Damon
Our eyesight is one of the most important senses and is something that we rely almost completely on. A person that has always lived with the gift of eyesight will, in most phases of his or her life, take it for granted and only once in a way would we ever stop to think about how drastically different our lifestyles would be without our eyesight. However, once in a way, we do get to experience, although to a very minimal extent, how curtailed our lives would be when our vision is impaired.

One of the most common instances of this happening are when our eyelids tend to get so inflamed so as to prevent us from opening our eyes, thus rendering us temporarily blind. It is important to remember that a swollen eyelid is rarely a medical complication on its own, but is more often a symptom of some other underlying condition. However, the use of low quality makeup or improper washing of the eyes can also cause inflammation of the eyelids.

Water retention in the eye is another common cause of the condition while other factors that influence the occurrence include high blood pressure and seasonal allergies. Sinus problems have also shown a tendency to influence the inflammation of eyelids and also cause fluid retention. Considering the number of factors that could influence the condition, it may be advisable to visit your doctor in order to properly diagnose the root cause of the condition to help identify a proper treatment.

Because swollen eyelids are such a common occurrence, a number of home remedies have bee developed all around the globe to help sufferers reduce the amount of discomfort it presents. For example, using a pillow whenever you sleep helps keep the head elevated above the body – thereby preventing fluid from accumulating around the eyes in the night. Another option to reduce the inflammation around the eyelids would be to slice a cucumber and place it in the chiller for a few minutes before your place it on the closed eyelid for a period of about 10 minutes. This is especially beneficial because of the high silicone and water content of the cucumber as well as its caffeic acid content that helps reduces water retention. Reducing your intake of salt is known to help substantially as excessive salt results in water retention and leads to puffiness around the eyes. Increase your intake of water to make sure that you body remains well hydrated and prevents the skin around the eyes from swelling up.
