Chaffed Skin Prevention and Treatments

by Kevin Pederson

What is Skin Chafing?

Skin irritation caused by friction, when skin keeps rubbing against skin or a harsh fabric, is known as chafing. Chafing skin is a common condition.

While most people tend to suffer from chafed skin at some time or the other, it is a condition more common to athletes and individuals in the higher weight categories.

The repeated and continuous rubbing of skin against skin or fabric results in a common set of chafing symptoms. The skin gets sore and red.

The skin becomes sensitive and the individual experiences a burning sensation. Chafing causes are usually a result of repetitive activities like cycling, jogging, running and walking. While chafing can occur anywhere on the body it is most likely to appear around the inner thighs, upper arms, groin, and nipple region. The condition is highly uncomfortable. If the condition is ignored, the chafed skin can develop blisters, and get infected. Chafed skin when left untreated can result in fungal infection.

There are some simple and effective measures to avoid chafed skin. Following them can help speed up recovery and minimise discomfort.

  • Dress appropriately when undertaking routine activities that could lead to chafing. Wearing clothes that are too tight or too loose can irritate the skin easily. Furthermore, undertaking exercise in clothes that do not absorb sweat effectively can cause a problem; the dampness caused by excessive sweat build up will only aggravate the skin condition.
  • It also makes sense to dress in natural fabrics. Opt for soft cottons during summer and soft wools during winter. Keep away from anything that is rough or scratchy, no matter how good it looks on you. Synthetic garments are no good either. They trap moisture and worsen the condition.
  • It is very important to take care of chafed skin, as it can get infected easily. If your skin begins chafing, be sure to bathe the affected skin with cool water twice a day. Either let the skin air dry or pat dry with a soft towel. Complete the routine by applying a good antiseptic ointment on the affected area. This keeps infection at bay.
  • Hot showers affect sensitive skin badly. So opt for cooler showers. Also opt for gentler soaps and shower gels, preferably one with natural ingredients. Let your body air dry. Be sure to lubricate skin with petroleum jelly or dust it down with powder. This eases skin irritation and burning. If you have sensitive skin prone to chafing it helps to wash clothes in gentle detergents.
  • In addition to the following points keep the body hydrated, practice good hygiene and wear soft dry garments. If the irritation continues consult your doctor.
