Types of Perms

by Sharon Hopkins
Perms or permanent waves have been in vogue for many centuries. There are many ways to perm hair to suit one’s hair texture and personality.  Choose a type which suits you.

The process of perming involves two main mechanisms. The first involves wrapping strands of hair around rods and the second involves chemical treatments. The difference lies in the rods used and the kind of solution applied.

Types of perms. The different types of perms are as follows. Choose the one which is best for you after consulting a hair stylist.
  • Body wave perm. This type of perm is stylized with loose perms with slight wave. This is suitable for those who like curly hair with more volume. The curls are large and are done with large rods. Naturally wavy hair will become curlier and add volume to the hair.
  • Multi-textured perm. This type is used when you desire a natural effect. For this perm type large and small rods are used to get a natural wavy look.
  • Pin curl perm. To create this hair perm type pins are used to curl sections of hair. This is done with gel and curling pins and chemical treatment is not needed. This gives a natural curly look without worrying about chemicals.
  • Root perm. This type of perm involves giving a lift to the roots of the hair near the scalp. The rest of the hair is not curled.  Root perms are best for flat and short hair types.
  • Spiral perm. Spiral perm depends on the width of the rod used. Chemicals are also used. Long perm rods are used to achieve this perm. You are left with a cascade of curls with a bounce and spring. The perms are tight and spring out in different directions.
  • Spot perm. This perm style involves curling one section of hair and is a permanent technique. You can have tight or loose curls depending on the width of the curling rod. This type is used to style a specific section of the hair or just at the ends.
  • Weave perm. Weave perm involves curling few sections of the hair and leaving the rest straight.  This gives a different texture to a certain area.
  • Gentle wavy perm. These perms add volume and comprise large and loose perms to give a wavy look. This type of perm adds structure and form to the hair.
  • Partial spiral perm. As the name suggests only a part of the hair is curled. Most often the upper portion is left straight and the lower edges are curled. This suits persons with medium and long hair.
  • Volumizing perm. This type is used to add volume and bounce to dull and lifeless hair. This suits different hair types and the stress is not on tight curls but on curls that are relaxed to give the bouncy look.
