When swelling or irritation occurs on a tendon, for sure you got tendinitis.  Soreness or tenderness usually takes place around the shoulders, elbows and knees resulting to excessive use, as in sports injury.     Correspondingly, swelling of these areas are named as rotator cuff tendinitis (thrower’s shoulders), patellar tendinitis (jumper’s knee), and elbow lateral epicondylitis (Tennis’ elbow).

The condition can also happen in the hips, heels and wrists. The most common way to detect swelling is visually or by the magic of touch and of course by the feeling of pain around the areas affected.  Detection is also done through ultrasonography, or magnetic resonance imaging.

Tendinitis in any of these localities can restrain further use of the knees, shoulders or elbows in strenuous activities.  However, conservative treatments include home treatment like rest and ice compress, activity adjustment, stretching and strengthening exercises, medications (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) and the use of inflatable brace are usually successful.  But standard treatment of tendon injuries is mainly to kill tendon pain with calming effect.

Surgical intervention may become mandatory.  But surgical procedure will largely depend on the level type of tendon tear.  Surgery takes out hurt tendons to give way for healthier tissue development.

But the setting in of tendinitis can be avoided.  And tendon pain can vary with each person.  Calm down on activities that can cause over use of the tendons.  Once you feel pain around the area, stop and rest.  Combine weighty exercises with less impact activities.  This way stretching the muscles on a regular basis can lengthen the tendon connection.  The more pliable muscles in this case are the ones being stretch.  This will tolerate less dragging and gripping on the tendon attachment to the bone.  Furthermore, you can dodge feeling of irritation in the tendon during these muscle stretches.  Usually stretching is done before you embark on an activity.  Warming up can make the most of the extent of joint movements.

But if tendinitis does occur, seek treatment as soon as possible.  Waiting for it to reach a level that’s acute can cause more damage than cure.  Tendon pain can be most debilitating when not attended to right away.  You know when it is happening because you can feel the pain.  Treatment can start right at home.

The healing process is not delayed and recurrence can be avoided.  Basic home treatment comprises first and foremost rest and don’t move that muscle.  You can at the same time apply ice on the swollen area for some minutes, 20 or more as many times in a day.  Then compress that area with either elastic wraps or bandages until the swelling subsides.  Elevate the injured part while resting like the knees above the level of your heart.  This has been said to reduce swelling.  But then prolonged immobility of the tendons can cause atrophy of the muscles.  After some rest slowly move that part.  It is important to heal tendinitis quickly and completely, otherwise it will haunt you forever.
