Biotin for Hair Growth

Biotin is an important property in enzymes that help to break down carbohydrates, fats and other such elements. A biotin deficiency would be seen in symptoms such as thinning of hair, loss of hair color, and red and scaly rash around the eyes, mouth and nose. Biotin treatment for hair growth works by breaking down and building up protein, and hair is made up of a type of protein called keratin. Biotin also helps the body in making use of the vitamin B, cell growth, and in the metabolism of fats and glucose. It is also a form of vitamin B, which was discovered after almost forty years of research.

Although there are no studies to prove that taking biotin for hair growth has been successful, people who have tried it have experienced success. But there has been one study that has shown reduced glucose levels after being given biotin supplements in type 1 diabetics, and controlling blood sugar levels can help in preventing hair loss, which is a side effect of diabetes. There is an idea that biotin promotes healthy hair however biotin hair growth result research is quite limited. Biotin is available in various forms such as:

  • Food: Biotin is naturally present in foods such as liver, kidney, egg, dairy, carrots, halibuts, nuts, Swiss chard, wheat products, soy, red cabbage, spinach, fruits, mushrooms, and beans. Mostly your diet would take care of your required intake of biotin. However, a poor diet may not be able to fulfill the normal biotin vitamins for hair growth.
  • Supplements: It is important to consult your doctor before taking any biotin supplements. There are various vitamin supplements that claim to have biotin properties in it; however there is no evidence that high doses of biotin can help hair growth.
  • Hair products: A number lot of hair products today have biotin as one of its ingredients to promote healthy hair growth. The results of using shampoos and conditioners with biotin have had mixed opinions from users. Some people have said that it has worked while others have claimed it has not worked at all. Biotin-rich hair products have shown to have some results for people suffering from alopecia areata, although taking the supplement internally has proven to be much more effective for treatment in the disease as compared to taking it externally.
  • Beer: It is said to be an excellent conditioner, this is probably because it is made of brewer’s yeast and brewer’s yeast is a great source of biotin.
