Ectopic Pregnancy

by Sharon Hopkins
Pregnancy is the period which lasts for around 9 months during which a fertilized egg develops into a fetus and then into a new born baby. During this period, several changes take place in the woman’s body. These changes put a considerable strain on the physical, mental and emotional state of the woman.

Under normal circumstances, sexual intercourse is needed to fertilize an egg. After sexual intercourse, the semen flows into the uterus. From here, it will move to the fallopian tubes.

These tubes alternatively pass one egg to the uterus every month. When sperm come into contact with an egg, fertilization may occur. This is not a confirmation of pregnancy. Until the egg successfully implants itself in the uterus, the woman is not pregnant. Again, under normal circumstances, the fertilized egg moves slowly to the uterus where it will plant itself in the thick lining of the uterus. This is the moment when a woman becomes pregnant in the normal sense of the word.

Pregnancy is the one time in a woman’s life when she is most anxious. Different questions like is everything fine with the baby, what is ectopic pregnancy, what am I to eat and so on are always on the woman’s mind. An ectopic pregnancy is an abnormal pregnancy because of the location of the fertilized egg. The word ‘ectopic’ literally means something that is not in its correct place. Once the egg is fertilized, it may remain in the fallopian tubes due to some blockage or abnormality. The egg may also implant itself in the wrong part of the uterus. Implantation has been known to occur elsewhere in reproductive tract including in the cervix. When this happens, the egg will begin to develop in the fallopian tube itself or where it has lodged itself. This is a highly dangerous condition because it can cause the tube to rupture which would lead to serious medical complications. This condition is known as a ruptured ectopic pregnancy. There are many ectopic pregnancy signs that can lead to the diagnosis of the problem. The ectopic pregnancy test is used to check for this problem so that the woman does not suffer from a ruptured ectopic pregnancy.

The problem with ectopic pregnancy signs is that many of these signs can easily be mistaken for the normal course of pregnancy. Most women will experience discomfort, breast tenderness, nausea, vomiting and missed periods as they become pregnant. These are the same as ectopic pregnancy signs. However, ectopic pregnancy should also produce a telltale symptom and that is bleeding. Most women with this problem will experience an ectopic pregnancy with vaginal bleeding. Normally, there should be spotting or no blood at all from the vagina. However, with an ectopic pregnancy, vaginal bleeding is common. This is because the growing fetus is causing internal damage to the fallopian tubes or the area of the abdomen where it is developing. When blood flow repeats throughout the day, it is a sign that there is some abnormality. It is entirely possible that the woman has mistaken her pregnancy signs and is actually experiencing a normal menstruation. However, this is unlikely. Therefore, any woman who experiences ectopic pregnancy signs should visit a doctor immediately for treatment. Another telltale sign is that ectopic pregnancy causes intense pain in the abdomen. Depending on the type and speed of rupture, the woman might experience light, moderate or debilitating pain. A visit to the emergency room is necessary at this stage.

There is no specific ectopic pregnancy test that can conclusively determine that the woman is pregnant. However, there are a series of tests that can be done to diagnose the condition. Under normal circumstances, the level of HCG in the woman’s blood should rise at a particular rate during pregnancy. The relationship between an ectopic pregnancy and HCG levels is that the level will be lower than normal during this time. If the woman is positive for a pregnancy test, she will most likely be treated for an ectopic pregnancy.

Ectopic pregnancy treatment involves the removal of the growing fetus. An ectopic pregnancy cannot develop into a full grown baby so there is no issue here relating to abortion and its controversies. In the case of an ectopic pregnancy, the only concern is for the health of the woman. In some cases, ectopic pregnancy treatment cannot be made as the doctor may not be able to detect the mass of cells developing. This mass may not show up on an ultrasound as well especially if the scan is done within a few days of fertilization. The lack of an accurate ectopic pregnancy diagnosis means that the doctor cannot take any further action until there is significant evidence of the problem. Therefore, the doctor will need to re-examine the patient regularly until it is discovered that she has an ectopic pregnancy or a normal pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy treatment varies depending on the progress of the pregnancy. If it is at an early stage, the woman may be treated with an injection that stops the development of the fetus. If the pregnancy has progressed, then the woman will need surgery to remove the fetus. This surgery may be done using a laparoscopy procedure or by complete abdominal surgery depending on how serious the condition is.

Most women will recover from ectopic pregnancy treatment and may be in a situation to bear a child again. However, some women may suffer from serious damage which will limit their ability to have children. In general, the sooner the ectopic pregnancy treatment, the better it is for the woman. Cases where the ectopic pregnancy diagnosis takes place early tend to be resolved quickly with fewer issues. Some women may resume their normal menstrual cycles very quickly after the termination of an ectopic pregnancy.

It is of great importance that couples who are planning to have children visit their doctor before they begin their attempts to do so. This enables the couple to be thoroughly examined for various health problems that can affect conception and pregnancy. This doctor can be visited after pregnancy is suspected as well. He or she will be in a position to access the full history of the woman and to conduct the most thorough investigation into her health.
