Food Allergy or Food Sensitivity

by Garreth Myers

Food Allergies

A food allergy can be described as an adverse reaction by the immune system, towards certain food types. It is very common for people of all ages to develop an allergic reaction towards foods like seafood, dairy products, soy products, wheat or gluten, peanuts, eggs and so or. A negative reaction that is caused by a food allergy is immediate and instant.

Consuming even the smallest amount of such food allergens can trigger off certain symptoms in a person, like rash, swelling and digestive problems. Severe cases of food allergy could result in breathing difficulties, palpitations or anaphylaxis, which could be life threatening. Food allergies can be seen in around 8% of the children and around 4% of the adults across the United States.

While there are no cures for these allergies, most children outgrow them, as they get older.

In a food allergy, the immune system identifies a certain food type or item as a harmful substance and then triggers off antibodies known as Immunoglobulin E (Ig E), which fight off the allergen. Even the smallest amount of that particular allergen can signal the immune system to release histamines and other chemical substances into the bloodstream. It is these chemicals in the blood that further trigger off the allergic reactions.

Food Sensitivity

Food allergies are often mistaken for food sensitivity or intolerance. One of the differences between food allergy and food sensitivity is that food sensitivity is a lot more common than food allergies. Although it can be as bothersome as food allergy, food sensitivity is not as serious, as it is not related to the immune system. Some of the most common food intolerances seen in people are lactose intolerance, gluten intolerance, tyrosine intolerance and sensitivity towards additives or preservatives. The reactions, which can be seen because of food sensitivity are gastro-intestinal, metabolic and pharmalogical responses. The negative reactions that are related to food intolerance are often delayed and could take up to two days to make an appearance. Therefore, diagnosing the exact cause of the reaction may be a bit of a challenge. People who suffer from food intolerance may be able to consume small amounts of that particular food item without facing any reactions. However, this is not the case of food allergies.

Some of the most common causes of food sensitivity are deficiency in digestive enzymes, celiac disease, psychological factors and recurring stress.

The only way to avoid food allergy and food senstivity reactions is by staying away from such foods. Immediate medical attention should be given in case of dizziness, lightheadedness, elevated pulse and breathing difficulties.
