Cataract is a condition where a milky white layer appears in the lens of the eye which causes problems with vision. The problem may partially obscure vision or render an individual virtually blind in the affected eye. On its own, a cataract does not cause blindness, it simply blocks off the light entering the eye.
While the rest of the eye may be functioning normally, the individual will only be able to see blurred images or no image at all. Cataract can be cured using a surgery where the lens is physically opened and cleaned of the fluid that is causing the blockage. This surgery takes a few weeks to recover from because the eye loses its protective layer and is therefore more susceptible to light than normal.
Cataract is a condition that affects older people in general. Individuals who have genetic abnormalities may develop this condition at a younger age than normal. The condition is progressive and leads to gradual vision loss. This helps an individual to diagnose the condition and treat it before it becomes dangerous. There are multiple reasons why an individual may
develop a cataract condition.
The most common cause for cataract conditions is the continuous exposure of the eyes to extreme bright light, often ultraviolet light. This is why individuals from tropical countries tend to be at a higher risk as they are exposed to bright sunshine very often. There are also many different associations made between cataract and various triggers including genetics, chromosomal abnormalities, diseases in the eye, metabolic conditions and the exposure to toxic substances.
Cataract treatment is often expensive especially if one is not covered by insurance. It is therefore advisable to enlighten yourself about the risk factors and also on steps that you can take wherever possible to minimize the risk of developing cataracts, so that there is no need for this surgery later in life. If you have a family history of cataracts too, it would be best to go for regular checks. Cataract conditions almost always occur in older people as a result of the repeated exposure of their eyes to bright conditions. The most widely regarded method for preventing cataract is the use of sun glasses that block out ultraviolet radiation. This has been known to slow the development of cataract. There is also a suggestion that anti-oxidants are good for a cataract condition, and although the research to verify such claims may be inadequate, it would be wise to stock up on those antioxidant rich fruits simply for their various health benefits.
