Natural Remedies for Puffy Eyes

by Sharon Hopkins
Symptoms of puffy eyes include puffing up of the eyelid, itching in the eyes, difficulty in opening or closing your eyes and redness as well. Puffy eye causes are very high blood pressure, a lack of sleep, stress, excessive intake of salt, or even a genetic defect. Allergies can also give rise to puffy eyes.

Some home remedies for puffy eyes and puffy eyes allergies are given below:-
  • Regular sleep is essential as it both prevents and cures puffy eyes. Lack of sleep is likely to result in a condition called as eye bags as the skin appears as bags under the eyes.
  • A quick way to reduce puffy eyes is to use teaspoons.

Place 5-6 teaspoons in the fridge. When cool, lie down, close your eyes and place one teaspoon on each eye. Replace the spoons when they get warm.
  • Cucumber is one of the best known remedies. The contracting qualities cucumber has helps the blood vessels to constrict quickly and thus reduce the puffiness in the eyes.
  • Washing your face with ice cold water is also a good way of treating puffy eyes.
Many people have puffy eyes after crying. As you cry, the sodium in the tears cause your eyes to swell up. The skin around your eyelids swell up and not your eyes as is commonly believed. There are many ways to reduce puffy eyes after crying. Keep in mind though, that the best remedy to reduce puffy eyes after crying is time. Your eyes need time to flush out the extra tears. After a few hours, your eyes will go back to normal. Here are some ways to get rid of puffy eyes after crying:-
  • As your eyes need to flush themselves out, increase your intake of water. This additional increase of water intake will flush out anything that is in your system.
  • Apply a cold compress on your eyes. This can be a cloth dipped in ice cold water or ice cubes in a wash cloth. Keep dipping the cloth in ice cold water as it gets warmer. Do this at least 4-5 times until you feel the puffiness has reduced.
  • Another good remedy is to place thin slices of potato over your closed eyes. Lie down and relax and leave these slices on for about 15 minutes. These compresses would help to relive the puffiness.
A busy and stressful schedule and less sleep give rise to bags under the eyes. Bags under the eyes are dark circles or rings under the eyes and not puffy eyes. Getting enough sleep, applying cucumber slices or potato slices, or chilled tea bags on the eyes are some of the remedies for this problem.
