Earache Remedies

by Kevin Pederson

A earache may be diagnosed as a minor symptom for certain sinus related infections. It may also occur if an individual is suffering from maladies like cold sores, bronchitis, and pneumonia. Earaches may also occur due to a head or ear injury.

Whatever the reasons, for immediate earache relief, it is best to consult a doctor before administering antibiotics or using natural remedies for earaches.

Earache Remedies
Since a earache may be a minor symptom, very often, it remains untreated. Although natural remedies can offer earache relief they are unlikely to cure or treat the cause of the earache, which is why it would be advisable to visit a doctor even if the pain subsides.

  • Some reasons for earache may not be a cause for alarm. They could be temporary and easily treated at home via simple earache remedies such as warm compresses on the ear. Remember to have your heat pad or towel at a warm and not hot level. Apply this compress gently only to the outer ear for some quick earache relief.
  • If the earache is persistent with a mild fever or cold, you could be suffering from allergies. Earaches also occur as a symptom of cold and flu. Ask your doctor to prescribe antihistamines according to the cause of allergy. This should take care of both the cause and its symptoms. In case of a fever, check with the doctor to rule out infections and use prescription antibiotics.
  • Airplane descents can often cause a earache due to built up air pressure. Earplugs are one way to avoid the tingling or pain in the ears at such times. For immediate earache relief you can also chew gum or suck on candy to relieve the pressure.
  • Swallowing repetitively can also unclog or drain fluid from the eustachian tubes, offering some earache relief. However, if your ears are clogged due to earwax blockage or ear infections, which cause clogging due to pus, you must immediately consult a ear specialist. Do not try to clean the ears on your own or with improper or unsterilized instruments.
  • While a doctor may prescribe nasal or ear drops to relieve earaches, for temporary relief you may use warm olive oil, which has soothing properties. Ensure that the temperature of the oil is not too hot. You could damage your eardrums by pouring any hot liquid down your ears.
Children suffer from ear infections or earaches more often than adults do. One of the causes could be an underdeveloped Eustachian tube, which results in ear infections. However, earache remedies for adults differ from earache remedies for children or infants. Since their internal ear tissue is still developing, they are very fragile. You could cause permanent ear damage if you are not careful while administering ear drops or if you indiscriminately use earache home remedies.

In the case of earaches in children or infants, ask them to hold their head straight and in erect position to allow fluid to drain out of the middle ear. Consult a doctor or pediatrician for antibiotics to treat ear infections. Never use an aspirin in children for pain relief. Your doctor will prescribe the appropriate dosage and medication for children. A earache caused due to an injury or bruise to the head or ear region must be checked by a specialist. Apart from medication, severe injury to the eardrum may require surgery. Since the eardrum is such a fragile region, untreated earaches could lead to partial or complete loss of hearing.
