Sunburn Remedies

by Sharon Hopkins
Spending time outdoors in summer can be fun. However, dealing with sunburn and its painful effects such as sunburn blisters and peeling can leave you feeling quite irate and exhausted. Sunburns usually show up within a few hours and affected areas may include your face, neck, earlobes, shoulders and any other part of your body, which came in direct contact with the sun.

Although blistering and peeling of the skin can be extremely painful and threaten to ruin your holiday sunburn treatment with natural sunburn blister remedies can be quite effective.

Here are some useful natural sunburn blister remedies and home treatments for peeling skin and other problems related to sun exposure.
  • Starting with the redness and hot flush feeling on the skin, sunburn will progress to blisters and peeling.

The first rule of sunburn blister remedies would be to not break or burst the blisters. They contain serum, which acts as a protective cover over the affected area. Resist the urge to scratch out these blisters. This hampers the healing process and increases risk of infections. Use a soothing antibacterial cream or cover the blisters with soft gauze.
  • Once the blisters start healing, you may notice your skin peeling. Sunburn peeling remedies dictate that since this is a natural process of getting rid of damaged skin, you must let your skin peel gently. Keep it moisturized by using aloe vera based creams or moisturizers.
  • Keeping yourself well hydrated is part of the sunburn treatment. Sun exposure and sunburn can cause bodily fluids to escape through your skin.
  • The pulp of the aloe vera plant is particularly beneficial for sunburn relief. Applied immediately after experiencing sunburn, the aloe vera gel can cool the area and provide relief from painful swelling or itching.
  • Similarly, a cold shower or applying cold compress to the affected areas can also provide relief from the burning sensation.

If your sunburn is severe followed by dizzy spells, nausea, fever and fatigue, it is best to consult a doctor. Most sunburn conditions will heal naturally and take a few or several days depending on their severity. However, certain sun exposure cases can escalate and lead to complications or skin conditions. Prolonged sun exposure can also increase the risk of skin cancers.

Luckily, a few preventive remedies can go a long way in avoiding the harsh effects of sunburn. If you live or work in areas where sun exposure is unavoidable, you must ensure these simple steps to protect yourself.

  • Invest in a good quality sunscreen lotion or cream that suits your skin. When purchasing a sunscreen, look for an indicator called SPF (Sun protection factor), which determines its efficiency at protecting the skin from harsh UV rays of the sun. You can ask a dermatologist to recommend the right SPF required for your region, lifestyle and so on. Apply liberally and reapply during the day since it may wash off due to perspiration.
  • For outdoor activities or exercise, invest in apparel that provides sun protection. Also, use a broad rimmed hat or cap and cover your head. You may use sunglasses with transition lenses to protect your eyes. Choose frames, which fit closely on your face to protect both your eyes and the delicate area around it. Sun damage can cause early age wrinkles and crow’s feet around your eyes.
  • The peak hours of strong sunlight fall between 10 am and 4 pm. You may not always find it easy to avoid outdoors, but reschedule your outdoor exercise activities to some other time.
