Epilepsy is a condition that is associated with abnormal brain function. It is related to abnormal neural activity in the brain. Individuals suffering from epilepsy will experience seizures that may happen at any time and without any particular trigger.
This makes epilepsy difficult to manage as it is not entirely possible to predict when and where a patient might experience a seizure. This brings with it the risk of the patient suffering from an
epileptic seizure far away from any potential medical assistance. Seizures can be treated at home itself, but the individual will need to be stabilized and placed on the floor with soft cushioning around him or her.
As the seizure passes, the individual will probably return to normal unassisted. However, if the seizure lasts for more than a couple of minutes, one should seek emergency medical help. During a seizure, there should be nothing in the mouth of the patient as this could cause potentially
serious injury.
There are many different medical solutions for epilepsy. These solutions are designed to help with the management of the condition. One may use an anti-convulsant to
deal with epilepsy. This is a type of drug that helps to reduce the chances of a convulsive fit which may develop into an epileptic fit. It should be noted that this is not a treatment to
cure epilepsy. This simply helps with the
symptoms of epilepsy and may prevent an attack from occurring. While this is obviously desirable, it is not a solution. Unfortunately, the
treatment for epilepsy often involves neurosurgery. This is both expensive and fraught with danger. The risk associated with such a procedure is often a deterrent which means that many people end up living with epilepsy for many years. This brings them back to anti-convulsant medication which will help them control their condition.
In many cases, particularly in cases involving children, epilepsy will pass as the individual grows older. As one grows, blood flow patterns change. Hormone levels also change. Both these changes may help with the condition of epilepsy. The best course of
treatment for epilepsy, therefore, is to use anti-convulsant medication and seek various therapy options. There are many therapies available which include the use of electric shocks. In some patients, there may be obvious triggers that cause the epileptic fits to occur. In such situations, the patient can be made to avoid such stimuli in order to prevent the occurrence of an epileptic fit.
