Strength training is basically the use of resistance to muscular contraction to build anaerobic endurance, strength and the size of the skeletal muscles. There are plenty of methods of strength training available and the ones that are most commonly used for strength training are elastic or hydraulic forces, or the use of gravity as well, to oppose muscle contraction. If practiced properly strength training is known to bring about an improvement in ones overall health and well being.
Some of the other benefits of strength training are increased ligament and tendon strength, bone muscle, improved functioning of the joints, increased bone density, improved cardiac function and even higher levels of good cholesterol. Strength training has other benefits such as lowering of blood pressure for those suffering from high blood pressure as well as lowering the risk of breast cancer. The benefits of strength training also include a decrease in the risk of
osteoporosis, reduction in
anxiety and
stress and also a reduction in the symptoms that are typically experienced during PMS.
Strength training also tends to improve the overall flexibility of the body by working the various muscles through a full range of motion. This increased level of flexibility in turn reduces the risk of back pain and muscle pulls in the individual. Another benefit of strength training is that it strengthens the ligaments and muscles, which in turn are then less likely to give way under stress, and the risk of them getting injured is also reduced. Similarly, because of strength training the increase in strength and bone density tends to reduce knee and back pain by building muscles around such areas. Strength training also tends to boost the metabolism of the individual which basically means that the body is able to burn more calories even when at rest and the amount of fat is also reduced. Although the person may not observe any loss in body weight on account of strength training, this is mainly because the fat starts to disappear and gets replaced by muscle instead. Strength training is also useful to get better toned, defined and firmed muscles. Another one of the benefits of strength training is that it improves one’s posture, as the way a person stands or sits is influenced by the heath of various shoulder, neck, hip and abdominal muscles, and strength training tends to help one sit and stand straighter and also brings about better stability and balance.
