Skin Care Herbs

by Sharon Hopkins
Almost everyone dreams of having skin that is clear, smooth and glowing. Good skin is usually associated with good health and beauty. However, while it is not really difficult to have clear and healthy-looking skin, you need to take the effort and follow certain measures to ensure that you maintain the skin tone that you desire.

Apart from basic skin care measures, like drinking a lot of water, eating a balanced diet and getting adequate exercise, there are several products and treatments which would help in improving the overall quality of your skin. However, some commercial beauty and skin care products may contain harsh chemicals, which would leave their side effects in the long run. Therefore, skin care herbs and herbal products have become increasingly popular nowadays.

These products are believed to be more natural and have fewer side effects, if used in the right way. Given below are some common skin care herbs that contain healing and rejuvenating properties:

  • Chickweed: The chickweed herb is usually used to make herbal creams, lotions, poultices and oils. It is a great way of treating itchiness or rashes that appear on the skin.
  • Eucalyptus: This herb is used in several products that alleviate the symptoms of coughs, colds, sinus and allergies. When rubbed on the skin, eucalyptus can help you breathe in a better way.
  • Lavender: This aromatic herb can be found in several lotions and perfumes, mainly because of it inviting fragrance. However, Lavender is also great for treating skin conditions, especially in children, because it is quite mild. The ailments that can be cured by lavender are rashes, bites, abrasions and burns.
  • Rosemary: This herb is not just invigorating, it smells great too. When applied to the scalp, rosemary can reduce dandruff. However, it could lighten the skin and the hair to some extent.
  • Calendula: This herb is often used as a skin softener, in the form of a salve that can be used to heal dry skin.
  • Peppermint: When applied to the skin, this herb has a stimulating effect. Therefore, it can be found in toothpastes, herbal baths and other skin care products.
  • Comfrey: Comfrey has skin softening properties, which is why it is used in salves and skin lotions. It also has healing properties and can stop the bleeding of wounds. However, this herb should be used sparingly, as there are some side effects that have been associated with it.
  • Fennel: Fennel seeds, when crushed, can be used as an herbal face mask which exfoliates dead skin. This herb can be used for all types of skin.
There are several other herbs like nettle, dandelion and red clover, which have detoxifying properties, when consumed in the form of tea. These herbs can be quite useful, for people who have suffered from prolonged skin conditions. However, before using or consuming any herbs and herbal products, it is best to check with a doctor or a dermatologist.
