Does Laser Treatment Work for Toenail Fungus

by Kevin Pederson
Fungal infections are a very common occurrence on both, the fingernails and toenails. Almost each and every one of us is likely to suffer from the condition at some point or the other during the course of our lives. Also known as onychomycosis, the condition essentially disfigures and destroys the toenails with the big toe and little toe being the most commonly affected.

Toenail fungal infections are known to be rather rare in children, but become more of a common occurrence as an individual continues to age. Studies have shown that about 48% of all the people within the United States of America have suffered from a toenail fungal infection at least once by the time they are 70 years old. Some of the factors that significantly influence the development of toenail fungus include wearing very tight fitting shoes, as well as environments that are warm and moist.

Places like shower or locker rooms are always very moist, thereby allowing the fungus to live much longer while also allowing them to attach themselves onto hosts more easily. As a result, public bath houses and sports locker rooms are two of the most common places where a toenail fungal infection is likely to develop. Toenail fungal infections are also likely to be a symptom that has developed as a result of some other, more serious underlying medical condition such as diabetes or HIV.

Once the fungus has been able to get a foothold on the toenail and further develop, the affected nail will become severely discolored. It would turn noticeably yellow or brown before some foul smelling debris also starts to collect under the nail. Before the nail eventually falls off, it would either crumble or become so thick that is almost completely prevents your from wearing shoes. Given the fact that toenail fungus has the possibility of turning into a chronic condition, toenail fungal infection treatment should be taken seriously even if the condition is not painful. Nail fungus laser treatment is becoming an increasingly popular option and has no age or health restrictions. Moreover, intensive testing on the same has shown no ailments or side effects. The fact that the treatment costs within the range of about 50 dollars, means that it is available to most of the population, unlike most other medical tests or treatments. However, one should be aware of the fact that there is no guaranteed fix when dealing with toe fungi including the very popular fungus pills.
