Home Remedies for Bunions

by Kevin Pederson
A bunion occurs when a bone on the foot overgrows causing the big toe to jut out more than it should. Most bunions are the result of wearing shoes that are tight, for long periods of time. Because women wear more styles of shoes, especially high heels, bunions are more common in them, as compared to men.

At times, bunions can also be hereditary. There is only way of getting rid of a bunion permanently and that is by getting it removed surgically. However, there are several inexpensive and reliable home remedies for bunions, that can help ease the pain and discomfort caused by them.

Given below are some common tips and home remedies for bunions:
  • Massage the foot that has the bunion regularly, to reduce the pain and inflammation. However, the massaging motion should be across the bunion and foot, rather than along the foot.
  • As wearing the incorrect shoe can cause a bunion, it is important that you choose your shoes carefully. In fact, if you are going through a bunion flare up, you should wear running shoes till it lasts. Running shoes have a softer cushion than others do and they also have more room for toes.
  • Wearing sandals are also recommended for bunions, as they easy on the feet and take the pressure off the bunion. When at home, you should walk barefoot, to allow your feet to breathe and hence heal faster. The worst shoes to wear during a bunion flare up are high heels as they worsen the condition.
  • Ice can help in reducing the inflammation caused by a bunion. Apply an icepack directly on the bunion and leave it on for at least 10 to 15 minutes. However, this remedy should not be used by people who have any kind of foot problems or diabetes.
  • Apply heating pads or hot compresses on the foot, so that the flow of blood increases, to that area. This would help in reducing the inflammation and easing the pain that was caused by the bunion.
  • Soak your affected foot in warm water, to which Epsom Salts have been mixed. Epsom salts are great for easing pain caused by bunions. You can actually soak both feet in this water, as Epsom salts can soften the skin on your feet. In case Epsom salts are not readily available, you can soak your feet in plain warm water.
  • Use toe spacers or sling pads to ease the pressure off the infected toes and can help to ease the pain.
