5 Dry Skin Remedies

by Sharon Hopkins
Dry skin has to be taken care of on a regular basis. Those who have dry skin need to work extra hard to make sure that their skin remains soft and moisturized. If not cared for properly, dry skin has a tendency to crack and chap.

Fortunately there are several skin care remedies that you can try in order to keep your skin soft and supple, even in the cold and dry winters. Here are the five easiest ways to care for your skin.
  • Avoid Hot Water: Everyone enjoys a hot bath, giving little thought to what the heat does to your skin.

Hot water can make your skin excessively dry, stripping it off the natural oils of your skin. These oils, known as sebum, line the entire skin and the scalp. However, if you spend too much time in the shower, under hot water, both your skin and your scalp will become excessively dry. Try to keep exposure to hot water as less as possible. In winters, after you have had a hot shower, it is always recommended that you use a good moisturizer to rehydrate your skin.
  • Olive Oil: Olive oil is an excellent supplement for the skin. Olive oil contains nutrients that can help soothe dry and itchy skin. It can also help remove rough skin from both the knees and elbows. If you have extremely dry skin, you can dab on some olive oil before using a moisturizer. Olive oil also supplies you with antioxidants which are good for your skin, as well as fatty acids that help keep your skin looking young.
  • Natural Exfoliants: Dry skin requires extra care and natural supplements. Exfoliation is necessary to remove dried and dead skin. Using natural exfoliates like oatmeal can help get rid of the layers of dead skin, exposing suppler and younger skin. Some of the best natural exfoliates can be made by mixing together yogurt and mashed papaya. This can be used on the skin once a week to get rid of dead skin.
  • Honey: Honey is an excellent cure for cracked and chapped skin. Organic honey can be used on the skin every day. Honey has nutrients that can be readily absorbed by the skin. It works excellently on chapped lips. Simply apply some honey on your face and let it remain for half an hour. Wash it off to get beautiful and moisturized skin.
  • Proper Nutrition: One of the most important ways to keep your skin hydrated is to have a good diet. Diets which are rich in essential fatty acids, vitamin C, vitamin E and water, are great for treating dry skin.
