Sinus pressure refers to the pain or pressure caused by an infected, mucus-filled or inflamed sinus cavity.
Sinus pressure symptoms are not very different from the symptoms related to the common cold, but the pain may persist for a much longer period. Other symptoms of sinus pressure are
headaches in the morning, fatigue or weakness, fullness in the ears, persistent coughing during the nights, nasal congestion, swollen eyelids, facial swelling or pain, affected sense of smell.
Severe cases of sinus pressure could include symptoms like pus in the nasal cavity,
vomiting,
wheezing and respiratory problems. To get relief from sinus pressure, the treatments you adopt should be different from treatments of a cold. You can use the following sinus pressure remedies, for relief –
- Try using a nasal wash to get rid of all the debris gathered in your nose.
Doing this will remove the stale nasal secretions. You can make your own nasal wash at home, by using two cups of warm water, to which a tablespoon of table salt has been added. Tilt your head back and using a shot-glass, pour the solution into your nostrils, one after the other, a few times. Blow your nose after using the entire solution.
- Using a humidifier to add moisture to the atmosphere could be a very effective way to get sinus pressure relief. Place a humidifier in a room that is enclosed and inhale its soothing vapors. You could also try inhaling steam in a hot shower, or from a basin filled with hot water.
- Pour some hot water into a bowl and add some raw onion, chopped into pieces, to the water. Bend your head over the bowl of water and cover your head with a towel, trapping the steam within. Inhale the steam deeply for 10 to 15 minutes. The vapors will open the sinus passageway, thereby relieving sinus pressure. Instead of adding chopped onion, you can also add a few drops of eucalyptus oil.
- Eating spicy food could also help encourage the mucus flow, within the nasal passage. Spices like cayenne, garlic and horseradish are very effective in thinning the mucus and should be eaten, whenever you suffer from nasal congestion or sinus pressure.
A sinus pressure headache is a condition where you can experience tremendous pain in the head, due to the under-ventilation of the sinus. If the sinuses do not get enough air, or if the mucus produced cannot get out of the sinus, you could experience the symptoms of a headache caused by sinus pressure.
